Is AZ-204 Retired, and Which Azure Developer Certification Should You Take Now?
Discover the best alternatives to the retired AZ-204 Azure Developer certification and choose the right certification for your career goals.

Is AZ-204 Retired, and Which Azure Developer Certification Should You Take Now?
Yes, AZ-204 is retired. Microsoft retired exam AZ-204 (Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure) and the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification on 31 July 2026. You can no longer book the exam, earn the certification or renew it.
If you already hold it, the certification stays active until its expiry date. If you were planning to take it, you now have several alternatives. The closest for developers is exam AI-200 for the Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate. Depending on your role, the Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), the Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) or the DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) may fit better.
What Exactly Did Microsoft Retire?
On 31 July 2026 Microsoft retired three things at once:
• Exam AZ-204: Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure
• The Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification
• The free renewal assessment for that certification
The certification page on Microsoft Learn now carries the notice "This certification and the renewal assessment are retired." Microsoft has not published a like-for-like successor exam.
AZ-204 tested general Azure development in five areas: compute, storage, security, monitoring, and connecting to Azure and third-party services. For years it was the default associate exam for developers who build on Azure.
AZ-204 was part of a wider 2026 clean-up
AZ-204 was not the only Azure exam to go this year. Microsoft also retired:
• AI-102 and the Azure AI Engineer Associate on 30 June 2026
• AI-900 and the Azure AI Fundamentals on 30 June 2026
• DP-100 and the Azure Data Scientist Associate on 1 June 2026
• AZ-500 and the Azure Security Engineer Associate on 31 August 2026
The pattern matters when you pick an alternative. Several of the newer Microsoft exams, such as AI-200 and AI-103, are built around AI workloads, and older exams are retiring fast. Check that any exam you plan for is still live before you start studying. The core infrastructure path (AZ-900, AZ-104, AZ-305 and AZ-400) was not on Microsoft's retirement list when we checked on 26 October 2026.
What Happens to Your Existing Azure Developer Associate?
Your certification does not disappear on the retirement date. Microsoft's credential retirement policy says a certification earned or renewed before retirement stays in the Active Certifications section of your Microsoft Learn transcript until it expires. After that it moves to Historical Certifications.
What you lose is renewal. Microsoft associate certifications normally stay active through a free online renewal assessment, and that assessment is retired for the Azure Developer Associate. Your current expiry date is therefore the last one.
Three things to do now:
- Open your Microsoft Learn profile and note the expiry date of your Azure Developer Associate.
- Keep the badge on your CV and LinkedIn while it is active. After expiry, list it as a past certification with its dates.
- Pick your next certification before the expiry date, especially if you want to use it as a prerequisite for AZ-400.
Alternatives to AZ-204
There is no single exam that takes over everything AZ-204 covered. Instead, pick the certification that matches the work you do. Here are the six realistic options, starting with the closest to AZ-204.
1. Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate (exam AI-200)
This is the closest current option for developers. AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure targets developers who build the back-end services behind AI applications. It keeps familiar AZ-204 ground such as Azure Functions, Service Bus, Event Grid, Key Vault and Cosmos DB. Since a large share of the exam is about data services, some candidates first build their basics with Azure Data Fundamentals DP-900 training before they start on AI-200.
It also adds new ground. Expect containers, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with pgvector, Azure Managed Redis and vector search, and Python as the expected language. Microsoft covers all of this in its five-day AI-200T00 preparation course, so you can see the full syllabus before you commit.
Best for: developers who want to stay on the developer track and work on AI-enabled applications.
2. Azure Administrator Associate (exam AZ-104)
AZ-104 is the infrastructure counterpart to AZ-204, and it is still live. It covers managing Azure resources, identities, security, networking and storage. Because it is the prerequisite for the Azure Solutions Architect Expert and one of two accepted prerequisites for the DevOps Engineer Expert, starting with Azure Administrator AZ-104 training keeps both expert paths open.
Best for: developers who also run or support Azure environments, and anyone who wants a stable associate certification that opens both expert paths.
3. DevOps Engineer Expert (exam AZ-400)
AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions is the natural next step for many AZ-204 holders. It tests processes and communications, source control, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation.
To earn the expert certification you also need an associate prerequisite. Microsoft's page, last updated 27 July 2026, accepts the Azure Administrator Associate or the Azure Developer Associate. If yours is still active, preparing with an Azure DevOps Engineer AZ-400 course now lets you use it before it expires.
Best for: developers who own CI/CD pipelines, release management or platform engineering.
4. Azure Solutions Architect Expert (exam AZ-305)
AZ-305: Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions moves you from building solutions to designing them. Microsoft requires the Azure Administrator Associate as the prerequisite for this expert certification, so plan AZ-104 first and move on to AZ-305 Azure infrastructure design training once you hold it.
Best for: senior developers moving into solution design or architecture roles.
5. Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (exam AI-103)
AI-103 is aimed at engineers who build, manage and deploy agents and AI solutions on Microsoft Foundry. It covers generative AI and agentic solutions, computer vision, text analysis and information extraction. It was still in beta when we checked, so look at the AI-103 exam page on Microsoft Learn for its current status before you book.
Best for: developers whose work is building AI agents and generative AI features rather than back-end services.
6. Start with the fundamentals (AZ-900 or DP-900)
If you were going to take AZ-204 as your first Azure exam, step back to a fundamentals certification first. AZ-900 covers core cloud concepts and Azure services, and an Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 course is a low-pressure way to start. DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals is the data-focused option, useful if you plan to move on to AI-200.
Best for: newcomers to Azure and career changers.
How to Choose The Right Alternative
Start from where you stand today, then follow the path that matches your goal.
- You hold an active Azure Developer Associate and work on pipelines: take AZ-400 while your certification still counts as the prerequisite.
- You hold an active Azure Developer Associate and want to stay a developer: prepare for AI-200 before your current certification expires.
- You were halfway through AZ-204 study: most of your Functions, messaging, Key Vault and Cosmos DB work carries over to AI-200. Add Python, containers and vector search.
- You want the most flexible next step: take AZ-104. It opens both the Solutions Architect Expert and the DevOps Engineer Expert.
- You want to design rather than build: take AZ-104, then AZ-305.
- You build AI agents and copilots: look at AI-103.
- You are new to Azure: start with AZ-900, and add DP-900 if you plan to take AI-200 later.
Whichever path you choose, confirm the exam is still listed on Microsoft Learn before you book. Microsoft retired several Azure exams in 2026, and its lists change.
