Master Oracle's modern multitenant architecture and gain the practical skills to administer Container Databases (CDBs) and Pluggable Databases (PDBs) with confidence. This hands-on course teaches you how to create, clone, migrate, secure, back up, recover, and optimise multitenant environments using Oracle Database 19c. Through expert-led instruction and practical lab exercises, you'll learn how to transition legacy non-CDB databases to Oracle's multitenant model, implement resource management and lockdown profiles, perform PDB-level backup and recovery with RMAN, and manage upgrades using Oracle Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA). You'll also explore Oracle Data Pump for efficient data migration and discover best practices for monitoring performance using Oracle's diagnostic tools. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped to deploy, manage, and maintain secure, scalable Oracle multitenant environments that support modern enterprise database consolidation strategies.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

Multitenant architecture

Build a strong understanding of Oracle's multitenant architecture by exploring how Container Databases (CDBs) and Pluggable Databases (PDBs) work together. You'll learn the advantages of the multitenant model over traditional non-CDB deployments and discover Oracle 19c licensing features, including support for up to three PDBs without requiring a full Multitenant license.

Upgrades and data migration

Gain the knowledge to successfully upgrade Oracle databases to Oracle 19c using both the Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA) and manual upgrade methods. You'll explore best practices for planning, executing, and validating upgrades while minimizing downtime. The course also covers Oracle Data Pump, enabling you to migrate data efficiently between databases within multitenant environments.

Backup and recovery

Learn how to protect Oracle multitenant databases through effective backup and recovery strategies. You'll practise backing up and restoring both CDBs and PDBs with RMAN, perform point-in-time recovery, create restore points, and use Flashback technologies to recover from errors while reducing downtime and protecting critical data.

Creating and managing PDBs

Develop practical skills for creating, cloning, and administering Pluggable Databases using a range of deployment methods, including hot cloning, remote cloning, and PDB relocation. You'll also learn how to plug, unplug, refresh, and manage PDBs throughout their lifecycle, providing the flexibility and scalability needed for modern Oracle database environments.

Course timeline

  1. Oracle Multitenant Architecture and Administration

    Day 1

    • Explore Oracle Database 19c Multitenant Architecture, including Container Databases (CDBs), Pluggable Databases (PDBs), licensing updates, and installation requirements.
    • Create and configure CDBs and PDBs using Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA), including silent installations and automated deployment methods.
    • Manage CDB and PDB environments by administering containers, controlling startup and shutdown operations, and configuring automatic PDB availability.
    • Perform day-to-day administration tasks such as managing tablespaces, storage, instance parameters, undo management, and Unified Auditing.
    • Create and administer common and local users, roles, profiles, privileges, and implement secure access across multitenant environments.
    • Reinforce key concepts through practical workshops focused on Oracle multitenant administration.
  2. PDB Management, Backup and Recovery

    Day 2

    • Create, clone, relocate, refresh, and migrate Pluggable Databases using techniques such as hot cloning, remote cloning, Data Pump, and DBMS_PDB.
    • Manage the complete PDB lifecycle, including unplugging, plugging, compatibility validation, and refreshable PDBs.
    • Protect multitenant environments using RMAN by performing backups and recovery for CDBs, PDBs, tablespaces, and individual datafiles.
    • Perform complete, point-in-time, and table-level recovery while recovering from control file and redo log failures.
    • Configure Flashback Database, restore points, and recovery options for both container and pluggable databases.
    • Build practical skills through hands-on exercises covering backup, recovery, and Flashback operations.
  3. Application Containers, Security and Performance

    Day 3

    • Build and manage Application Containers, Application Roots, and Application PDBs while deploying, upgrading, and maintaining shared applications.
    • Configure common and local users, roles, privileges, and shared application objects within Application Containers.
    • Secure Pluggable Databases by implementing Lockdown Profiles, keystore isolation, and advanced access control policies.
    • Monitor and optimise PDB performance by managing memory, CPU, I/O resources, Resource Manager plans, and workload distribution.
    • Analyse performance using Automatic Workload Repository (AWR), Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM), snapshots, and automated maintenance features.
    • Apply enterprise administration techniques through practical exercises focused on security and performance management.
  4. Oracle 19c Upgrades and Data Migration

    Day 4

    • Plan and prepare Oracle Database upgrades by assessing compatibility, running pre-upgrade checks, creating test plans, and backing up existing environments.
    • Upgrade Oracle databases to Oracle 19c Multitenant using Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA), silent installations, or manual upgrade methods.
    • Complete post-upgrade validation, troubleshoot upgrade issues, and understand deprecated features and configuration changes.
    • Upgrade existing Pluggable Databases while maintaining service continuity and database integrity.
    • Migrate data between databases and PDBs using Oracle Data Pump, transportable databases, and network-based import and export techniques.
    • Consolidate your skills through practical labs covering database upgrades, migration, and multitenant deployment best practices.
