Take your Kanban expertise to the next level with Kanban Systems Improvement (KSI), an advanced course designed to help you evolve, optimize, and scale Kanban systems beyond a single team. Building on the foundations established in Kanban System Design (KSD), this practical course explores how to identify bottlenecks, manage variability, improve flow, and connect multiple Kanban systems across an organization. You will learn how to use flow metrics and evolutionary change to make better decisions and continuously improve service delivery.

What Skills Will You Gain?

At the end of this program, you will be able to:

Flow Optimization & Bottleneck Removal

Identify sources of delay and variability, pinpoint bottlenecks, and take practical action to streamline workflow delivery.

Core Kanban Practices & Scalability

Apply core Kanban practices to optimize service delivery and scale connected systems seamlessly across multiple organizational teams

Dependency & Cadence Management

Manage upstream and downstream dependencies effectively while establishing continuous Kanban cadences to maintain steady flow.

Data-Driven Performance Analysis

Analyze Lead Time, Run Charts, and Cumulative Flow Diagrams (CFDs) to evaluate performance and improve process predictability

Risk Reduction & Evolutionary Change

Apply principles of evolutionary change to continuously refine systems, reduce delivery risks, and enhance overall reliability

Cross-Organizational Optimization

Manage interconnected Kanban workflows using system metrics, feedback loops, and empirical data to guide ongoing improvement decisions.

What makes this course unique?

Put your learning into practice through hands-on exercises focused on scaling Kanban across upstream, downstream, and connected systems. You’ll also practice using Kanban cadences and key flow metrics—including Lead Time, Run Charts, and Cumulative Flow Diagrams—to identify improvement opportunities and support better decision-making.

Prerequisites

Kanban System Design (KSD) is strongly recommended before attending KSI. Kanban University specifically recommends completing KSD first because KSI builds on concepts introduced in KSD, including STATIK, work item types, and classes of service.

Unlike KSD, which can be suitable for people new to Kanban, KSI is intended for practitioners who already have a solid understanding of Kanban and want to improve and scale existing systems. Kanban University describes KSI as the next step after KSD.

There is no separate examination prerequisite. Participants who complete KSD + KSI fulfill the course requirements for the Kanban Management Professional (KMP) credential.
